Q What's the step required to build a double clickable eBook.
A First you should distinguish between the main application's menu bar and the document editor's menu bar. The document editor's menu bar only appears when in document view and not when in images and vides views. The document editor's menu bar is used the same way Microsoft word is used. The main application's menu bar is used to control the main application. You can choose to hide the document editor's menu bar and other features from ‘Option' located in ‘Edit' menu.
Now there is two way to build an eBook either using the wizard or manually using the instructions below.
Follow these steps:
- Run Ez eBook Studio
- Choose ‘Save As' from the ‘File' menu and input a name for the eBook.
- Now choose ‘Add Document' from the ‘Documents' menu.
- Now the software will ask you for a name for a new drop down menu. A drop down menu is like a folder, choose any name.
- Now you will have a choice of whether to import a document from your hard disk or to use the document already open in the document area.
- Its best to import your test from Microsoft word type document or standard text file
- Now you can edit or add text
- You can import images either into the document itself by copying and pasting to the images section by pressing the 'Images' button on the left of the screen and choosing 'Add Image' from the 'Images' menu
- Hyperlinks can be added to documents by choosing 'Hyperlink' from the 'Insert' menu (Insert belongs to the document editor menu and not the main applications menu)
Note: Remember to click the 'Save changes' button located at the bottom right of the screen on every document change
Now you have added one document repeat to add another one
When you finish adding documents and images choose 'Build Final eBook' from 'File' menu to build the double clickable eBook.
Q How do eBook files get saved on my harddisk?
A When you create a new raw ebook or use the Save As feature a new folder will be created on the harddisk using a path you set. The folder will contain two files. Please don't add, rename or delete any files in this folder. If you wish to delete an eBook delete the main folder in whole, not just one of the files residing in the folder.
Two thinks happen when you click the 'Build Final eBook' menu item in the 'File' menu; the the raw editable files used to create the final eBook will have a sequence number added to them, showing the times the eBook was built. A new folder with the name of the original folder + the word 'DCA' (Double Clickable Application) will be created. This folder will contain the new eBook merged with the viewer engine. This is the folder you should distribute to end users. If you wish to test drive the Final Built ebook, please make a copy first. The distributed eBook should not be previously executed, or certain feature such as serial number authentication will be validated for all distributions and will not work properly.
Q Why are background images not showing in my ebook?
A You have probably set the eBook settings in 'Options' to display menus instead of buttons. Background images will not show due to the fact that the area will be stretched towards the edges of the screen and will be hidden under neath.
Q How can I set any particular document to open at a location I choose?
A To make the document appear at a certain position when the user selects it from the drop menu. Set the mouse curser to the desired location then press the 'Save Changes' Button. This way the top of the document will start with the line that the cursor was on when it was saved.
Q Why should I submit my finished eBook?
A Submitting ebooks will help you in increasing revenues and download counts by listing it in the best online eBook portals. Your position in search engines will also improve due to increased link popularity, which search engines use to determine which websites should be ranked toward the top of search results.
Q Will jumping from section to section, for example from Documents to Video prevent the documents from getting saved?
A Yes, be careful not to press any button before clicking the 'Save Changes' button or all data since last save will be deleted.
Q how many eBooks can be edited at a time?
A Only one ebook can be edited at a time
Q Why do I need Apple Quicklime and will the end user who purchased the eBook need to have it installed too?
A Quicklime is only required if you plan to use the image section of the ebook and want to use backgrounds.. Quicklime is not required if you have documents that has images incorporated in to them.
The end user viewing the built ebook should have Quick Time installed only if you added images to the image section of the eBook or used images for backgrounds. A message will appear informing the user to install Quick Time on first ebook load.
Q What's the best way to start writing documents?
A The best way to start writing a documents is to save new documents to disk using the built in word processor or your favorite word processor like Microsoft Word; then import the documents back using the 'Add a Document' menu item from the 'Documents' menu and press the import button. If the document is already open click on the 'Already Open' Button. If you later wish to edit a document use the 'Save Changes' button to save changes made to the encapsulated document. This way it is much safer and you will always have a backup copy on your harddisk if accidental deletion occurred.
Q Why do the trial, serial number, password and registration forms not showing in preview mode?
A Trial, serial, password and registration forms only appear when the ebook has been built as Final eBook DCA.(Double Clickable Application), or when testing in 'Options'
Q What does that mean 'The Indexes were made with a different sorting table. Would you like to re-index or quit?'
A This usually happens when the eBook is viewed with a PC having a different language than the one used to create it. Click on Re-Index to reindex, no harm will affect the data.
Q What precautions should I take in generating and distributing serial numbers?
A The serial numbers generated using the standalone serial number generator will only work for the ebook generated using the same raw ebook files. The best practice is to build both the SB Generator and the Built ebook at the same time before modifying any setting in 'Options'. If for example you changed the type of serial number from standard to time expired or even the time the serial will expire, you will have to build a new SB generator too.
Building final DCA ebooks is usually the final task implemented so to distribute the ebook online or on CDs. Don't build large amounts of ebooks except for testing purposes. To duplicate an built ebook simply copy and paste the built ebook as many times as needed, but remember not to run the original ebook (The one you used to duplicate) prior to this, or many setting will be activated.
So in conclusion it wiser to choose one kind of serial number wether standard or time expired and stick with it (if its possible). Sometimes an older SNGenerator will work perfectly with a newer Built ebook (Same raw ebook of course) but why take the chance, keep in mind that the built SNG has the Serial setting you choose in 'Option' embedded in it, so each time you modify these setting in the editable raw eBook it better to build a new SNG and Final Built eBook that match.
Q Why is the last button in the GUI labeled 'Quit' but it doesn't allow the ebook to quit?
A The 'Quit' button in editing or preview mode will cancel the form but in Final Built eBook mode will force the ebook to quit.
Q When should I use the Destruct eBook Option?
A You shouldn't use the Destruct eBook Option when you are planning to give users serial numbers to activate eBooks. That's because the user will unlock an empty eBook and will be surprised too see that no data resides in it. Use this option when you want to send the user a non protected version of the eBook after purchasing your product.
Q Why is my eBook large in size (Mega Byte Speaking)?
Because unlike other eBook compilers Ez eBook Studio uses advanced security algorithms to protect eBook data and also because the viewer is encapsulated into the built ebook, this takes up space.
Compress your ebooks with a utility like WinZip before distribution. The viewer it self is 25Mb before compression and only 8 megabytes after compression, added to that how much data you will add to the ebook; images and videos consume a lot of space.
You can also use a tool called 4D Tools to compact the data files before distribution. This will greatly reduce size especially if you had added and deleted data too many times over.
Follow the direction below to compact an eBook using 4D Tools:
- Open the eBook in Ez eBook Studio then close it. This is very important or 4D tools will compact the main application's data file and not the eBook.
- Run 4D Tools
- You will be represented with a a dialog box. Browse to the Ez eBook Studio folder and select it (Located by default in the program files folder), then select the structure file within it.
- Click on the maintenance tab and press on the 'compact' button. Save the new raw data files in the same folder of the eBook and not the Ez eBook Studio folder (Add a number as to distinguish them from the original), then delete the two original files.
- now build the Final eBook, compress it using a compression agent and distribute it. You can also add an installer to your eBook using a program like InstallShield, this will make it easy for end users to install and uninstall the ebook.
You can also perform similar actions on an already built eBook, Follow the steps below;
- Open the Built eBook then close it.
- Run 4D Tools
- You will be represented with a a dialog box. Browse to the Built eBook folder and select it, then select the structure file within it.
- Click on the maintenance tab and press on the 'compact' button. Save the new raw data files in the same folder of the Built eBook (Add a number as to distinguish them from the original), then delete the two original files. Be careful not to delete other files, because unlike the Raw eBook folder the Built eBook folder has many files in it.
Note: Note if you don't want to use 4D Tools, compressing the eBook will be just fine. The only difference is that the eBook will expand again on the user's harddisk, which isn't a problem because your goal here is to compress the eBook for easier distribution on the Internet. The dummy space left in the eBook data file because of numerous data addition and deletion will be highly compressed by a utility like Winzip but will return once decompressed, 4D Tools on the other hand will remove it.
Q How can I add maximum security to my eBooks?
A For maximum protection and security enable both serial numbers and trial modes in 'Options'. Also if you use both serial and trial at the same time a more comprehensive dialog box will appear with option such as Try, Buy Now, Enter Serial and Quit included in it. Using a time expired serial number allow you to control the time span serial numbers will stay valid so after that period the serial cannot be used to unlock the eBook.
Q How can I skim quickly through documents?
A If you press the left or right keyboard arrows while a DDM (Drop Down Menu) is selected the viewer will jump quickly from document to document. Press the up or down arrow and a pop up list will appear.
Raw eBook: eBook created by selecting 'New eBook' or 'Save As' from the 'File' menu (Used for editing)
Final Built eBook: eBook created by selecting 'Build Final eBook' from the 'File' menu (Used for distribution)
Known Issue: In rare cases the end user will be able to run an expired ebook for 1 more time. This will not be such a big problem because the user will be able to view the eBook one extra time only.
